We opened for business in 2010 and have been instrumental in the development of lightweight steel building in South Africa. Introduction to Lightweight Steel Framed Building
The construction industry is always looking for new materials and new technology. Conventional building methods is no longer the only option with new methods arising from across the globe. Lightweight steel framing is the answer and the future of building.
Lightweight steel framed building is the preferred forms of construction for residential housing in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It is also being used extensively in Europe, and now South Africa. This method of building has been well tried and tested over the past 50 years, and is becoming the preferred way of building in many countries.
Lightweight steel frames are incredibly dynamic. Making changes to design on site easier with less cost to the client/builder and no need for program revisions. A comparison between conventional building methods and lightweight steel framing is virtually indistinguishable due to the system having sharper lines and a far superior finishing quality. Ecoframe frame has a vast range of internal and external finishes to meet any budget. With our extensive knowledge of the industry and can achieve the desired aesthetics internally & externally for the high end housing market.
The Ecoframe lightweight steel frame comprises of a load bearing stud and track frame and truss system which makes up the structural component of the building. Each frame & trusses is structurally engineered using integrated engineering software which is then checked by a professional engineer. The software has the ability to check the transfer of loads from the trusses through the walls & floor frames. The steel frame is then clad externally with either a brick veneer (single brick wall), flat board steels that are rendered, Shiplap planks, etc all with a unique project specific finish. The type of cladding has no impact on the structural integrity of the house. The brick façade ensures that the house has the look and feel of a conventional house.
The internal walls are clad with 15mm BPB Gypsum Rhinowall board, 9mm Magnesium oxide board or equivalent material. The BPB Gypsum Rhinowall is SABS approved and is used extensively in South Africa for internal cladding and partitioning in houses, hotels, offices etc. The board is non-combustible and has SABS Fire Rating approval. Magnesium oxide boards are factory-made, non-insulating sheathing board product. It can be used for a number of applications including wall and ceiling linings, fascia’s, soffits, tile backing, etc. Magnesium oxide is a versatile material used in residential and commercial building construction. MgO is widely used primarily as wallboard alternative to conventional gypsum-based drywall.
There many different types of walling and roofing insulation on the market today. The walling insulation fits In-between the outer façade and the internal cladding. It is either a polyester or polystyrene insulation. This insulation is also used in the internal walls. It effectively reduces energy costs by keeping the house warm in winter and cool in summer. The R-Values for lightweight steel framed homes is far superior to that of brick and mortar. The insulation also serves as an acoustic insulation by absorbing the sound and preventing it from being transmitted from one room to another. The insulation is SABS approved and is non-combustible, and conforms to SABS Fire Rating.
Skilled labour is not required to erect lightweight steel frames and trusses. The frame is erected in 2 days (depending on the size of the house), and then the artisans can start with the brick laying/board fixing and roof cladding simultaneously. This accelerates the building process, and ensures that the internal finishes can begin early in a dry encapsulated environment.
